Dynamite Sandwich
A Woonsocket original! This spicy, saucy ground meat filling with peppers and onions on a soft roll is Rhode Island comfort food at its finest. Similar to a sloppy joe but with its own unique New England character.
Equipment Needed
Instructions
Prep the vegetables: Dice the onion and both bell peppers into small, uniform pieces. Mince the garlic. Having everything ready makes the cooking go smoothly.
Brown the meat: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
Add vegetables: Add onion and bell peppers to the meat. Cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened but still have some texture.
Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Don't let it burn!
Add sauce ingredients: Pour in tomato sauce and stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, and paprika. Mix well to combine.
Simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken and the flavors meld together.
Season to taste: Add salt, pepper, and additional hot sauce to taste. Dynamites should have a kick but not be overwhelming.
Prepare the rolls: Split the buns and butter the insides. Toast them lightly in a dry skillet or under the broiler until golden.
Assemble: Spoon a generous portion of the hot meat mixture onto the bottom bun. Don't be shy - pile it high! Top with the other bun half.
Serve: Serve immediately while hot. Dynamites are messy, so have plenty of napkins ready! Pairs well with french fries or coleslaw on the side.

- Cheese it up: Top with melted provolone or American cheese for a richer sandwich.
- Make ahead: The filling reheats beautifully the next day - many say it's even better!
- Church supper staple: Dynamites are a beloved dish at Rhode Island church suppers and community events.
